Six tips to limit your daily exposure to microplastics
Invisible to the naked eye, microplastics invade our environment and our bodies. It is estimated that we could inhale up to 68,000 particles per day, according to a recent study. Here are six simple actions to limit this exposure – with concrete and sustainable solutions.
1. Drink filtered water rather than bottled water
Plastic bottled water is one of the main sources of microplastics, due to residue from the packaging and the cap. Even glass bottles are not completely exempt. Tap water generally contains fewer microplastics, but it can also be contaminated.
Solution : use an efficient filtration system such as:
- MONDERMA Waterfilters – stainless steel gravity fountains, 8.5 L (family size) or 5.6 L (Travel version), without electricity.
- Coldstream FTO+ Filters – eliminate microplastics, PFAS, heavy metals, pesticides, pharmaceutical residues, etc.
- Berkey Systems – also gravity, compatible with several types of high performance filters.
Carry your water in a stainless steel or glass bottle, avoid single-use plastics.
2. Stop heating food in plastic
Heating plastic in the microwave releases millions of particles. A 2023 study shows that in 3 minutes, a plastic container can release more than 4 million microplastics.
Recommendations: avoid microwaving with plastic, prefer glass, stainless steel or ceramic containers. Even tea bags can be a source of contamination.
3. Cook at home
Highly processed industrial dishes often contain more microplastics. Home cooking limits the risks, especially if you use:
- Wooden, stainless steel or glass utensils
- Containers without plastic or chemical coatings
- Gentle cooking techniques (steam, filtered water, etc.)
4. Also filter the water used for cooking
Cooking your pasta, vegetables or soups with filtered water is just as important. Microplastics can migrate into food during cooking.
Use your fountain MONDERMA Waterfilters or any gravity system equipped with Coldstream FTO+ filters to guarantee healthy water, even in the kitchen.
5. Reduce the consumption of certain seafood products
Seafood such as mussels or oysters, which filter water to feed themselves, accumulate a lot of microplastics. A dish of mussels can contain up to 90 plastic particles.
Advice : favor small fish with a short lifespan, and consume filter-feeding species in moderation.
6. Ventilate your interior and avoid synthetic textiles
Indoor air is loaded with microplastics from clothing, carpets and heated plastics. Researchers estimate that we inhale tens of thousands of them every day.
Best practices: ventilate regularly, vacuum with a HEPA filter, avoid synthetic textiles (polyester, acrylic) and favor cotton or wool.
Conclusion
Even if all the consequences are not yet fully known, applying these precautionary measures today is a responsible decision. Drink filtered water every day with MONDERMA Waterfilters fountain equipped with FTO+ Coldstream filters is a great place to start.
