The Travel Berkey® Gravity Water Filtration System was featured in a recent CBS Colorado News report on recent Environmental Working Group (EWG) testing to determine which water filters were most effective in removing PFAS from drinking water. In EWG testing, the Travel Berkey® system equipped with powerful Black Berkey® elements removed PFAS down to undetectable levels, placing the system in the “Best Overall” category. The Travel Berkey® system also offers larger capacity (1.5 gallons) and long filter life compared to other systems tested by EWG (each pair of genuine Black Berkey® elements can filter up to 6,000 gallons of tap water before replacement is recommended, depending on incoming water quality). The Travel Berkey® system was also mentioned in a recent CBS Philadelphia story on EWG's PFAS filter testing.
PFAS: A growing health problem
PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) have been manufactured for over 60 years and can be found in many items used by consumers every day. PFAS are associated with several health problems in humans, including effects on children's development, increased cholesterol levels, increased risk of certain cancers (such as prostate, kidney, and testicular cancers), and more. It is estimated that at least 97% of Americans have detectable levels of PFAS in their blood, and a 2023 USGS study found that nearly half of faucets in the United States (45%) contain at least one type of PFAS.
