Why can the ceramic of Coldstream FTO+ filters come loose?
The ceramic of Coldstream FTO+ filters can sometimes separate from its base. Several factors can explain this problem: insufficient bonding during manufacturing, the fineness of the ceramic, the weight of the filter when filled with water and the shocks caused during handling of the upper tank.
Sometimes insufficient gluing on the base
The ceramic is fixed to its base using a bonding and sealing material. During manufacturing, if the operator does not apply enough glue, if it is poorly distributed or if it does not correctly cover the entire contact area, the fixing may lack strength.
The filter may then appear correctly assembled at first, but then gradually come loose under the influence of humidity, weight and repeated handling.
A heavier filter when filled with water
After use, the microporous ceramic and internal filter media remain impregnated with water. The wet filter therefore becomes significantly heavier than a dry filter.
When the upper tank is tilted to empty the remaining water, this additional weight exerts greater stress on the junction between the ceramic and its base. If the bonding is insufficient, the risk of detachment increases.
The shock when the upper tank tilts
When the tank is tilted while the filters are still installed, they may hit the wall or bottom of the tank. The weight of the wet filter amplifies the force of the shock.
This lateral pressure is directly transmitted to the bonding zone. A single major shock, or several repeated small shocks, can weaken the fixing and end up detaching the ceramic from its base.
A relatively fine ceramic
The ceramic casing of the FTO+ filter is approximately 7 mm thick. This design promotes the passage of water, but also makes the element more sensitive to shocks, twists and mechanical stress.
A more compact or reinforced ceramic near the base would provide better robustness, particularly when dismantling, cleaning and emptying the tank.
How to limit the risks?
It is best to remove the filters before tilting or turning the upper bowl. The filter must be handled by its base, without exerting pressure on the ceramic.
If the ceramic becomes mobile, cracks or separates from its base, the filter should no longer be used. Its tightness and filtration performance can then no longer be guaranteed.
In summary, delamination can result from insufficient glue during assembly. The fineness of the ceramic, the weight of the filter when it is impregnated with water and the shocks when the tank tilts can then accelerate or cause the separation.
