Berkey® - Why prime Berkey® PF-2™ water filters?

During the assembly, handling and shipping process of filter components, a slight amount of dust or tiny harmless particles may be deposited on these elements. This is a precaution intended to ensure the optimal quality of your experience with Berkey® PF-2™ filtration elements. To prevent disruption due to dust, we strongly recommend that you thoroughly prime both ends of the filter elements before installing them into your Berkey® system.

By completing this preliminary process, which should only take about 30 seconds, you will be able to remove all traces of dust. In certain situations, it may be necessary to repeat this process up to ten times to ensure that there is no dust. An in-depth study was carried out to assess the impact of these successive washes on turbidity. The results of this analysis are summarized below:

- After a first wash: reduction of turbidity by more than 94%
- After two washes: reduction in turbidity by more than 96%
- After three washes: reduction in turbidity by more than 98%
